A teenager from Odesa region posthumously gave a second chance at life to five people

At the Zakharivska Hospital, doctors performed organ explantation (heart, kidneys, lungs, and liver) for transplantation to seriously ill patients who had been waiting for donation for years.

A 13-year-old boy from the Odesa region was hospitalized at Zakharivska Hospital on November 28 with acute cerebral circulation disorder. On December 4, doctors diagnosed brain death. After a difficult decision, his parents agreed to donation.

Thanks to this, five recipients received long-awaited transplants:

  • lungs were transplanted to a 35-year-old mother of five children from Mykolaiv region;
  • heart was received by an 8-year-old boy from Dnipropetrovsk region;
  • kidneys — a 9-year-old boy from Lviv and a 6-year-old child from Vinnytsia region;
  • liver — a 17-year-old girl from Kyiv.

The operations were performed by specialists from the Heart Institute, Okhmatdyt, Kyiv Nephrology Center, and Western Ukrainian Specialized Center in Lviv.

All transplants were successful, patients are in stable condition. Treatment is funded by the state within the Medical Guarantees Program.

Sincere condolences to the boy's family and enormous gratitude for their noble choice that saved five lives.
